The goal of Google Penguin is to decrease the ranking of websites that violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. It’s a Google Search algorithm (a filter, set of rules) that capture sites that are deemed to be causing spam in Google’s search results. For example, websites that have things like backlinks or any other content that doesn’t have anything to do with their website’s main content. These type of spammy websites will be penalized until the Google Penguin filter runs again. With the advent of Google Penguin, there also has been an increase in fake referrals that degrade your SEO if not filtered out.
Here’s a few of the major changes:
- With the release of Penquin 4.0, it is now real-time. This means it will be part of the Google Search refresh process. Any changes made to your website will take effect much faster. For example, you make your website easier to read, valuable, unique and engaging. These types of changes will help increase ranking.
- Penguin is now more granular. Spam will rank lower based on spam signals, meaning some pages of your website will rank higher than others. In the pass, spam signals affected the ranking of your entire website.
